William
Fiebig is a farming system agronomist with over 35 years of
experience in designing and implementing rural development projects. He holds a
Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the University of Florida, 1990, with
previous qualifications in agronomy, crop production and farming systems
(M.Sc., University of Florida, 1987) and fisheries and wildlife (B.Sc.,
Michigan State University, 1971). He has a very good working knowledge of
French and is fluent in the Kikongo language (DRC).
William Fiebig began his career as a fisheries Peace Corps Volunteer in the Democratic
Republic of Congo (then Zaire); he has had a close association with the DRC
ever since. He served as the Rural Development Scientist with the International
Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) on the National Cassava Program
conducting multi-locational yield trials comparing new varieties from the
Institute Nationale des Etudes et Recherché Agricole" (INERA)
breeding programs with traditional cassava varieties. From January 1998 to
August 2002, he was an Agricultural Officer (Seed Security) with the FAO in
Rome. In 2002, Mr. Fiebig joined Save
the Children Federation, Inc. as the Senior Technical Advisor for agricultural
programs in the Food Security Unit. From 2009 with International Relief and
Development (IRD) as a Senior Program Officer providing technical advice to
agricultural programs in Afghanistan and other projects worldwide.
Mr. Fiebig has extensive
experience of natural resources management systems for food and nutrition
security programs, sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry systems,
community-based natural resources management programs and projects,
agricultural research and extension, homestead permagardens, agro-forestry, fish
culture, agribusiness and value chain development, and project evaluations. He
has participated on project design and evaluation teams for USAID and has
prepared long-range planning and analytical studies. Over the last decade, he
has been working with smallholder farmers to address their common concerns
within their communities that are related to the impacts
of climate change on their farming systems and promotes practicing climate
smart agriculture. Most recently he has
joined FoodWorks as a Senior Associate Partner focused on sustainable climate
smart/conservation agricultural farming systems that improve household
livelihoods and reduce household food and nutrition insecurity.
