After graduating with a BSc in Ecology at the Oxford Brookes University, he obtained a PhD in agroforestry at the Open University. He went on the become Associate Professor in agro-forestry at Cranfield University and MD of Fountain Renewable Resources Ltd (specialising in trees as part of environmentally sound rural development).
Professor Newman’s early career was based on research enabling greater profit and environmental/social benefits from agroforestry and mixed cropping systems including high value horticulture. He then went on the direct a portfolio of development projects with a combined value of over $100m.
Recently he has been working on Impact assessment approaches across all sectors of development. He is involved with training and research in relation to monitoring and evaluation. He has also been working with major food and beverage companies on sustainable procurement where environmental and social benefits are improved through crop diversification at farm or district level. He has also been working on climate smart agriculture in Africa and Asia
His work on the sustainability of forestry led to the formation of the Forest Stewardship scheme and other tree linked standards and forms of certification. His work has contributed to major climate change initiatives in the UK, such as the Centre for Low Carbon Futures and the UK Centre for Climate Change Policy and Economics. He has recently established Carbon Synergy Partnerships Ltd, which seeks to develop new business models for low carbon futures.
Professor Newman has worked in over 65 Countries with recent major projects in Laos, Bhutan and India in Asia, Liberia and Swaziland in Africa and evaluation work in six countries in the Latin America region. He can call on support from over 100 experienced consultants from many disciplines in order to improve the sustainability and profitability of projects.
