GQB is an Oxford University educated economist and engineer who has worked in the agriculture and food related industries in more than 30 countries. He has successfully undertaken over 60 distinct projects for private and public sector clients.

After university and military service in the British Army, Corps of Royal Engineers, Quartermaine Bastin was an agricultural trade and commodity markets analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit then served as a marketing economist in Papua New Guinea. He wrote a two-volume book on the oilseeds, oils and fats markets for the UN (ITC). From 1991 to 1998 he was Asia regional project manager and economist/ investment planner with the world’s largest diversified food business, Cargill Inc.

After 1998 Quartermaine Bastin worked as a consultant to the Asian Development Bank

designing sector loans up to $40 million in Laos (water management and smallholder development) and Uzbekistan (grains productivity). He returned to the private sector to build a snack food factory in China for Procter & Gamble and owned-managed a small privately funded venture capital company based in Thailand (projects in floriculture, fisheries and livestock).

In 2004, with three partners, he founded FoodWorks Company Limited with which he has been associated ever since.

Via FoodWorks Mr. Quartermaine Bastin was Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Finance/ Competitiveness Support Fund in Pakistan (2006-09) and subsequently (2010 - 2011) provided a service as Global Business Advisor to a $1 billion US-based enterprise with projects in Eastern Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East (including Afghanistan and Yemen) and Asia.

In 2012 he returned to Afghanistan to work on saffron (for USAID) and then changed focus in 2013 to Zambia, where he worked first with a not-for-profit agriculture enterprise and then assisted in the establishment of a road construction company, winning a $26 million contract for the Kasama to Chambeshi Bridge rehabilitation project; in 2013-14 he served as Chief Operations Officer/Acting Project Manager before handing over to a full-time engineer and returning to FoodWorks. He undertook further work in Pakistan (cool chains and cold storage for USDA) and rice market research in Cambodia for IFC. In 2015 he is focused on continuing development work in the rice sector in Cambodia funded via the Asian Development Bank (Rice Sector Development Program).

When not travelling for work, he divides his time between Bangkok and Oxford.
